15th of February is International Childhood cancer Day

February 14th, 2012.
Mumbai, India.

Are you aware that children also suffer from cancer?
Are you aware that cancer in children is different than the adults?
Are you aware that cancer in children is CURABLE?
Are you aware that many girls with cancer are denied treatment?

15th of February is International Childhood cancer Day. Many children suffer from cancer during childhood ranging from birth to 15 years of age. These cancers can occur in any part of the body, but the one occurring most commonly is blood cancer. The solid tumors which occur in children affect the kidney most commonly.

The number of boys affected with cancer is found to be more than girls, but this could also be a misleading fact in our country as there are many girl children who are denied treatment.

The cancers in children is on the rise and each year more than 160,000 children are diagnosed with the disease. Of these 80% of children with cancers are in the developing countries like India. And it is in these countries like ours, the knowledge and information about the cancers in children is meager.

When diagnosed early enough, and treated with the appropriate protocols, approximately 70% of childhood cancers are curable. However, today only 20% of the world's children benefit from advanced medical care.

The good news is that most can be cured or a long-term remission achieved if prompt and essential treatment is both accessible and affordable. For this purpose, there are several NGO’s and charitable organizations offering financial help to the parents of these unfortunate but brave children who fight cancer and emerge succefful to lead a normal healthy life and become productive members of the society.

We in India have eradicated polio, small-pox with consistent and persistent efforts and we can surely do something even for the children affected with cancer.
